Gustav Schmidt (canoeist)

Gustav Schmidt (born August 9, 1926 - December 29, 2016 ) was a German canoeist . In 1958 he won two world championship titles.

Schmidt took part in the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki and together with Helmut Noller took fourth place in a two-person kayak over 1000 meters. Two years later he and Michel Scheuer won the silver medal at the canoe racing world championships in 1954 in a two-person kayak over 1000 meters . Schmidt achieved his greatest successes at the canoe racing world championships in 1958 , when he won the title in a four-person kayak with Michel Scheuer, Georg Lietz and Theo Kleine, both over 1000 meters and over 10,000 meters.

Schmidt was also successful at the 1957 European Championships . Together with Meinrad Miltenberger, he won silver in a two-man kayak over 500 meters, both of them also took second place in the 4 x 500 meter relay. Together with Scheuer, Lietz and Kleine, he also won the 10,000 meter title.

From 1954 to 1958 Schmidt won five German championship titles in the 4 x 500 meter relay with the Bertasee Duisburg team. In 1953 Schmidt won the 1000-meter distance in a single kayak, in 1951 he won with Gerhard Hemmers and from 1954 to 1956 together with Michel Scheuer in a two-man. From 1955 to 1958 Schmidt won in a four-person kayak, with Scheuer and Kleine also taking part in all four titles. Schmidt won the 10,000 meters in 1954 with Michel Scheuer in a two-person kayak and in 1958 in a four-person kayak.

In 1958 Gustav Schmidt ended his active career. From 1959 until the 1989 Summer Universiade he took over the management of the Duisburg regatta course , after which he passed the management on to his son Dieter.
