Michael Kopystynski (Polish Michał Kopystyński later Kopysteński , Ukrainian Михайло Копистенський Mychajlo Kopystenskyj , secular name Mateusz Kopystyński * unknown, Kingdom of Poland ; † probably in 1610 , Kopysno, Kingdom of Poland-Lithuania ) was an Orthodox bishop of Przemysl (1591-1610). He rejected the Union of Brest in 1596.

Life

Mateusz Kopystyński came from a noble family. He was initially married and had at least two children, Theodor and Hemogen. Mateusz Kopystyński was the uncle of Zacharias Kopystenski .

In 1591 he was appointed bishop of Perenyschl . At this point in time he must have been a monk according to Orthodox canon law , probably with the Basilians . His spiritual name became Michael. He took part in the Synods of the Ruthenian Orthodox Bishops who were preparing a union with the Roman Catholic Church. His signatures have been present in several documents since 1594. It was not until October 1596 that he refused to approve the final resolution of the Union of Brest, together with Bishop Gedeon Balaban of Lemberg and a few other clergymen.

As a result, he was banned from the Church ( Anathema ) by the new United Church and King Sigismund III. outlawed him. Nevertheless, he was apparently to a limited extent still active as an Orthodox clergyman, because in 1599 King Sigismund III dealt. in a document again with his person. He probably died in Kopysto in 1610.
