Marcello Varallo (born October 8, 1947 in Milan ) is a former Italian ski racer . He almost exclusively drove downhill races .

biography

Varallo drove World Cup races from 1967 , and he was also employed by the Guardia di Finanza . At first there were no noteworthy successes. However, this changed at the World Cup in Val Gardena in 1970 , when he surprisingly finished fifth in the downhill on the Saslong , where he earned his first World Cup points (8). Almost two years later, he was tenth in the downhill at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo . Only after these career highlights did he get another World Cup point in the downhill from Crystal Mountain, WA when he was 10th. His best results in the next winter are twice a second place, achieved on January 6th and 7th 1973 on the Kandahar descent in Garmisch-Partenkirchen behind the winner Roland Collombin (Switzerland).

However, a month earlier, Varallo seemed to be on the verge of a downhill victory when he led in Val-d'Isère on December 10, 1972 , but the Austrians David Zwilling and Reinhard Tritscher finished ahead of him with high starting numbers . The 1972/73 season ended Varallo as the third best downhill skier in the world.

In 1974 he resigned from top-level sport and took over the management of the Hotel Ladina in Stern in the Abtei community . Since 1980 he has been on the organizing committee of the ski races on the Gran Risa , which have been an integral part of the World Cup since 1985. Since 1999 he has been president of the organizing committee. He was also President of the Alta Badia Tourism Association for eight years .
