Ottavio Missoni (born February 11, 1921 in Ragusa di Dalmazia , Kingdom of Yugoslavia , † May 9, 2013 in Sumirago , Lombardy ) was an Italian fashion designer and founder of the fashion company Missoni .

Missoni is known in particular for its creations in the field of knitwear, which are characterized by zigzag patterns and strong colors .

Life

In 1953 he and his wife Rosita founded a textile factory in Gallarate (Italy). His first larger collection was presented in Milan in 1963 . He has received numerous international awards.

Before his career as a fashion designer, the 1.86 m tall Missoni was successful as a track and field athlete. At the Olympic Games in 1948 , he was sixth in the 400-meter hurdles . Two years later, he finished fourth at the European Championships in Brussels.

Private

Missoni met his wife Rosita, daughter of a cloth manufacturer from Varese , at the victory celebration of the 1948 Olympic Games and married her on April 18, 1953. His three children Vittorio, Luca and Angela are all in leading positions in the family business. The eldest daughter Margherita Missoni of his daughter Angela is a well-known Italian model.

Vittorio

His eldest son Vittorio disappeared on January 5, 2013 with his wife, the entrepreneur and Mille Miglia racing driver Guido Foresti and his wife Elda Scalvenzi in a small plane of the type BN2 Islander ten nautical miles south of the Los Roques archipelago belonging to Venezuela . On October 16, 2013, almost nine months after the crash, the remains of Vittorio Missoni were recovered from the wreck on the seabed of the Caribbean Sea off Maiquetía , Vargas . The complete wreck was recovered from the ocean floor on November 25, 2013, ten months after the plane crashed.
