Los Roques (Spanish Archipiélago Los Roques ) is an archipelago about 170 km north of Caracas in the Caribbean Sea and part of the Venezuelan Dependencias Federales (federal territories).

Discovery story

The archipelago has appeared on Spanish maps since 1529, and from 1589 it was officially part of the viceroyalty of New Spain .

The archipelago officially consists of 67 islands with areas from 0.1 to 1521 hectares . and forms the National Park Parque Nacional Archipiélago de Los Roques .

The main island of Gran Roque is the fifth largest island in terms of area with 182.2 hectares. It is the only inhabited island, with a population of 1471 as of the October 30th 2011 census. Ten years earlier, the population was 1143. The barrier reef that surrounds the archipelago is one of the largest in the world. The coral reef is home to countless marine animals (duck, puffer and trumpet fish , mollusks and corals , lobsters , sponges , sea ​​urchins etc.) and birds ( pelicans , herons , frigate birds etc.). In past centuries the islands served as hiding places for pirates who stopped here and hid their frigates .

On the island of Gran Roque is the airport of the archipelago with an asphalt runway (1000 mx 26 m)
