Los Testigos (Spanish Archipiélago los Testigos ) is a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea , about 400 km north of Caracas , the capital of Venezuela , and about 80 km northeast of Isla Margarita . Geographically, the islands belong to the islands under the wind , administratively to the Venezuelan Dependencias Federales (federal territories), which are subordinate to the Venezuelan Ministry of the Interior.
The archipelago consists of six islands and numerous tiny rocky islands. The following islands belong to Los Testigos :
- Isla Testigo Grande , the main island
- Isla Conejo , east of the main island
- Isla Iguana , south of the main island
- Peñón de Fuera , northernmost rock
- Isla Morro Blanco , south of the main island
- Isla Noreste , northeast of the main island
- Isla Rajada , east of the main island
- El Chivo , rocks
The islands together have a land area of 649.5 hectares . The population is 172 people (as of the census of October 30, 2011), they live mostly on Isla Iguana and their main occupations are fishing and tourism .
Also on Isla Iguana , the Venezuelan Navy operates a small secondary station ( La Estación Secundaria de Guardacostas "Los Testigos" ), which is subordinate to the main station Carúpano . A Movilnet radio station was built on the same island in 2010 and is operated with alternative energy sources.
Testigo Grande Island is sometimes visited by cruise ships.
