Spartaco Bandinelli (born March 27, 1921 in Velletri , † February 17, 1997 there ) was an Italian boxer . He won at the Olympic Games 1948 in London silver medal in the flyweight .

Career

Spartaco Bandinelli started boxing in his hometown at the age of 16. He belonged to the sports club AS Audace and was trained there by Cesare De Santis. He fought in flyweight, the lightest weight class in amateur boxing. Before he could achieve sporting success, he was drafted into the Italian military and was a soldier until September 1943. After the end of World War II, Spartaco Bandinelli began boxing again in 1946 at the AS Audace sports club. His club coach at the time was Giovanni Mattogni. In 1947 he was noticed by the then national coach of the Italian amateur boxers Steve Klaus, who appointed him to the Italian national team of amateur boxers.

In December 1947 he fought in Stockholm in an international match against Sweden. He defeated it in the flyweight Börje Olsson on points. In 1948 he became the Italian flyweight amateur boxer champion. He was then sent by the Italian Boxing Federation to the 1948 Olympic Games in London. In the flyweight he defeated Olli Lehtinen, Finland, Leslie Handunge, Ceylon, Luis Martinez, Spain and Han Soo-an, South Korea, on points. He was in the final for the gold medal, in which he lost on points against Pascual Pérez from Argentina. He won the silver medal with it. As the best European boxer in his weight class, he was also awarded the title of European Champion .

In May 1949 he was appointed to a European selection that fought against the United States in Chicago. He lost it in the flyweight against Arthur Brown on points. In June 1949, Spartaco Bandinelli started at the European Championships in Oslo. But he lost his first fight there against Janusz Kasperczak from Poland by being disqualified in the third round.

In 1950 Spartaco Bandinelli ended his boxer career. Professional boxer never became. In 1970 he took over the coaching position at his parent club AS Audace and was very successful. He led several of his protégés to the Italian master. In 1982 he had to give up his coaching position due to a serious illness.

In 2008 a sports hall in the town of Velletri was named "Pallazzetto dello Sport" S. Bandinelli in his honor.
