Dino Meneghin (born January 18, 1950 in Alano di Piave , Veneto ) is a former Italian basketball player who was active from 1966 to 1994. The 2.06 m tall center player is considered one of the best European basketball players of his time, as well as the best Italian basketball player ever , primarily because of his leadership and rebound skills . His participation in twelve finals in the European Cup (ten in a row), of which he won seven, is unique . In 2003 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as one of the first players to never play in the NBA .
Dino Meneghin was honored in May 2008 as one of the fifty great personalities of basketball in Europe . The award was given by the Euroleague Basketball in an official ceremony in the Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid , in Madrid ( Spain ).
Meneghin was provisional from the end of September 2008 to the beginning of February 2009 and then officially President of the Italian Basketball Federation until January 2013 .
His son Andrea Meneghin also played in the Italian national team .
Career
Meneghin began his adult career in 1966 with Pallacanestro Varese . He stayed with this club until 1980 and celebrated numerous successes with him, including seven Italian championship titles and four Italian cups . At European level, Meneghin reached the final of the national championship cup every year from 1970 to 1979 with Varese , winning the title five times. In the 1970 NBA Draft , he was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the eleventh round, making him the second player under contract with a European club who was selected in an NBA draft . Just one lap earlier, his teammate at Varese, the Mexican Manuel Raga , had also been selected by the Hawks.
In 1981 Meneghin then moved to Olimpia Milano , where he was under contract until the end of his career in 1994, except from 1990 to 1993 when he played for Pallacanestro Trieste . During this time he won the Italian championships five more times, as well as the Italian Cup and the European Cup twice each. In total, he completed 836 games in Serie A, in which he scored 8560 points and around 6000 rebounds .
National team
Meneghin's greatest successes with the Italian national team were winning the silver medal at the 1980 Olympic Games and the European title in 1983 . He also won the bronze medal at the European Championships in 1971 and 1975 . In 1970 and 1978 Meneghin reached the semifinals of the World Championships .
In total, he played 271 times for the national team and scored 2847 points - both numbers mean today the second place in the history of the Italian national team. Meneghin participated in four Olympic Games, two world championships and eight European championships . Later he was team manager for the national team.
