Pierluigi Marzorati (born September 12, 1952 in Figino Serenza , Lombardy ) is a former Italian basketball player who played for Pallacanestro Cantù from 1969 to 1991 . He is Italy's record international player and was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007 as the first Italian player .
Pierluigi Marzorati was honored in May 2008 as one of the fifty great personalities of the sport of basketball in Europe . The award was given by the Euroleague Basketball in an official ceremony in the Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid , in Madrid ( Spain ).
Career
society
Marzorati, who grew up in the Cantù area , spent his entire career with Pallacanestro Cantù . He trained with Carlo Recalcati and later Antonello Riva successful Guard duos and was for many years as a point guard head the team. During this time Marzorati won numerous titles, including two Italian championships and nine European cups with the high point of the national championship cups in 1982 and 1983. In the further course of the 1980s, however, it was other clubs that determined events in Europe and Italy, too Marzorati now had to pay tribute to his age. By winning the Korać Cup in 1991, he was able to celebrate a conciliatory end to his career. His jersey number 14 has not been awarded at Cantù since then. He was then vice-president of the association until 1996.
In 2006 Marzorati played for Cantù one last time to celebrate the club's 70th anniversary, becoming the first player to play basketball at a professional level in five decades. In total, he played 692 games for the club in Serie A , in which he scored 8659 points - both numbers mean club records to this day.
National team
For the Italian national team , Marzorati played 278 games, which is the Italian record to date, and scored 2209 points. His greatest successes were the European championship in 1983 and the silver medal win at the 1980 Olympic Games on the side of Dino Meneghin . He also won bronze at the European Championships in 1971 , 1975 and 1985 . Marzorati took part in four Olympic Games (1972, 1976, 1980, 1984), two world championships (1978 and 1986) and eight European championships (1971, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985).
