Carlo "Charlie" Recalcati (born September 11, 1945 in Milan , Lombardy ) is an Italian basketball coach and former player who coached the Italian national team from 2001 to 2009 . He also won the Italian championship with three different clubs as a coach . As a player he was active from 1962 to 1979 for Pallacanestro Cantù and from 1967 to 1976 for the national team.
Career
As a player
Recalcati began his career with Pallacanestro Cantù in 1962 , where he stayed until 1979. In the 1970s he formed one of the best guard duos in European basketball with Pierluigi Marzorati . With Cantù Recalcati won the Italian championship in 1968 and 1975, three times the Korać Cup (1973-75) and the European Cup Winners' Cup (1977-79) and once the Intercontinental Cup (1975). Recalcati scored 6,396 points in 434 league games for Cantù. His last two years as a player, including the second as a player-coach , he completed at CBM Parma.
With the Italian national team Recalcati won the bronze medal at the European Championships in 1971 and 1975 . He also took part in the World Championships in 1967 and 1970 , the Olympic Games in 1968 and 1976 and the European Championships in 1967 and 1969 . In total, he played 166 international matches for Italy, in which he scored 1,239 points.
As a trainer
From 1981 to 1984 Recalcati trained Alpe Bergamo, which he led up to the A1 series . He then returned to Pallacanestro Cantù . There he reached the semi-finals of the Italian championship four times within six years, but he was denied a final as well as winning the title in the Korać Cup , the final of which he reached in 1989. With Viola Reggio Calabria, which he coached from 1990 to 1995, he relegated to Serie A2 , but managed to get up again immediately and moved into the play-offs in Serie A1 in the first two years . After coaching the Serie A1 promoted Teorematour Milano for only eight (winless) games in 1995 , Recalcati took over the coaching position at Alpe Bergamo for a year again in 1996.
With Pallacanestro Varese , which he coached from 1997 to 1999, he was surprisingly Italian champion in the second year. Also Paf Bologna led Recalcati immediately the championship title and the following year the final of the Cup and the Euro League semi-final. With Montepaschi Siena he also won the Italian championship title in his first season and reached the semifinals of the Euroleague again. From 2006 to 2010 Recalcati was not employed as a club coach before he again took over the management of the Pallacanestro Varese team. After two years there he switched to the coaching position of Sutor Basket Montegranaro .
Recalcati was appointed coach of the Italian national team after the unsuccessful European Championship in 2001 . He won with her the bronze medal at the 2003 European Championships and the silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games . However, this was followed by disappointing results, as Italy missed the quarter-finals at the 2005 and 2007 European Championships and the 2006 World Cup . After Italy did not qualify for the 2009 European Championship , Recalcati remained in office until November of that year. He was replaced by Simone Pianigiani , who had also succeeded him in Siena.
