New Zealand took part in the boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in the Soviet capital Moscow , so four New Zealand athletes started not under the New Zealand state flag , but that of the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association , the predecessor organization of the New Zealand NOK.

The flag bearer was Brian Newth.
