The New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) is the National Olympic Committee in New Zealand , based in Auckland .

history

The committee was established in 1911 and accepted as a member eight years later by the International Olympic Committee . The first Olympic participation took place on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920 . At the Winter Olympics in Oslo in 1952 , New Zealand made its Winter Games debut . Recent presidents have been Sir David Beattie , who headed the committee from 1989 to 2000. He was followed by John Davies , who formally held it until 2003, but was represented by Sir Eion Edgar after just one year . Edgar officially replaced Davies, who died in office in July 2003, and stayed in office until 2009, before Mike Stanley took over.

Awards

NZOC gives various awards to athletes who have made a contribution to the Olympic movement. The highest award here is the New Zealand Olympic Order , which was introduced in 1991 and replaced the previous membership for life. It also awards the Leonard A Cuff Medal, named after Leonard Cuff , and the so-called Lonsdale Cup , which has been awarded annually to a New Zealand athlete or a New Zealand team since 1961.
