The bristle- tail grass ( Festuca incurva , Syn .: Psilurus incurvus ) is a species of the fescue genus ( Festuca ) and thus the family of sweet grasses (Poaceae).

description

The bristle tail grass is an annual grass that grows in small tufts and develops numerous thin stalks that are up to 30 (rarely up to 50) centimeters high. The leaf sheaths are smooth and glabrous. The ligule is a 1 millimeter long membranous border. The leaf blades are only up to 5 centimeters long, narrow and pointed. The flower spike is up to 20 centimeters long, about 1 millimeter wide and usually curved. The spikelets are partially sunk into the spindle. The spikelets are single-flowered and (without the awn) about 5 millimeters long. The lower glume is only formed on the uppermost spikelet, the upper glume is stunted to a 1 millimeter long scale. The lemma is three- veined , keeled, coarse and provided with a 3-6 millimeter long awn at the tip. There is only 1 stamen.

The chromosome number is 2n = 28.

distribution

The bristle tail grass occurs from the Mediterranean area to Central Asia and Pakistan. In Germany the species was only rarely introduced inconsistently.

Taxonomy

The bristle tail grass was first described by Antoine Gouan under the name Nardus incurva in Hortus Monsp .: 33 (1762). It was only placed in the genus Festuca in 2014 by Walter Gutermann in Phyton (Horn) 54: 190 (2014) . Synonyms of Festuca incurva (Gouan) Gutermann are: Psilurus incurvus (Gouan) Schinz & Thell. , Nardus aristata L. , Rottboellia monandra Cav. , Psilurus nardoides Trin. and Asprella aristata (L.) Kuntze .
