Romania took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, with a delegation of 44 athletes. Six riders took part in the Olympic Equestrian Games 1956 in Sweden Stockholm part.

It was Romania's sixth participation in the Summer Olympic Games since 1900 .

Flag bearer

The shooter Iosif Sîrbu carried the flag of Romania during the opening ceremony in the Olympic Stadium .

Medals

With five won gold, three silver and five bronze medals, the Romanian team finished 9th in the medal count .

The most successful athlete was the canoeist Leon Rotman , who won two gold medals.
