Olympic history of Romania
The Olympic Romanian History begins with the first participation in 1900 at the Summer Olympics .
history
However, there was no Romanian team at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, but only one participant, Gheorghe Plagino , who lived in Paris. Romania did not take part in the subsequent games. In 1914 the National Olympic Committee (NOK), the Comitetul Olimpic Român , was founded. The 1916 Olympic Games were canceled because of the First World War, and Romania did not yet take part in the first games after the war in Antwerp in 1920.
Romania's first participation under the sovereignty of the NOK was at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. 1928 in St. Moritz was the first participation in the winter games, at that time with two bobsleigh teams. Since then, Romania has participated in all games except the 1932 and 1948 Summer Games and the 1960 Winter Games . Romania also took part in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, despite the boycott of most of the communist states in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union.
The first Olympic medal was won by the rugby team in 1924, which finished third in Paris. Four years later, women took part for the first time in Amsterdam. The first and to date only medal at the Winter Games was won by the Romanian two-man bobsleigh with bronze in Grenoble in 1968. The canoeist Aurel Vernescu in summer and the biathlete Éva Tófalvi in winter were three times each flag bearer at the opening ceremony.
