Olympic history of Bolivia
- | - | - |
Bolivia , whose NOK , the Comité Olímpico Boliviano , was founded in 1932, first sent athletes to the Summer Olympics in 1936. No athletes were sent from 1948 to 1960. Since 1964, Bolivia has taken part in all summer games (with the exception of the boycotted games in Moscow in 1980), but without having won a medal. In 1956 and from 1980 to 1992, Bolivian athletes also took part in winter games, again without winning a medal.
Overview
Summer games
Bolivia first took part in the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936. The Bolivian NOK sent an athlete, the swimmer Alberto Conrad, to Berlin. No Bolivian athlete took part in the following four summer Olympic Games. It was not until 1964 in Tokyo that a Bolivian Olympic team competed. This time the delegation also consisted of an athlete, this time a canoeist. In 1968 in Mexico City riders and marksmen were added, athletes in 1972 and cyclists in 1976. Bolivia responded to the US call for a boycott and stayed away from the 1980 Moscow Games.
Boxers, fencers, judoka and wrestlers from Bolivia first took part in 1984 in Los Angeles. On August 5, 1984, the marathon runner Nelly Chávez became the first woman from Bolivia to take part in the Olympic Games. A Bolivian weightlifter competed for the first time in Seoul in 1988, a diver in Atlanta in 1996, a tennis player in Sydney in 2000, and a gymnast in Athens in 2004
Winter games
The debut at the Olympic Winter Games took place in Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1956 with an alpine ski racer. The first winter Olympian was René Farwig . In 1980, 1984, 1988 and 1992 Bolivian athletes traveled to the winter games again, all of them alpine ski racers without exception. The best result came in 1984 with Scott Sánchez in 34th place in the giant slalom. In 2018, a cross-country skier took part for the first time.
