Overview

Guor Marial as an independent competitor in the London 2012 marathon

South Sudan gained independence in 2011. Due to the civil war in South Sudan , no NOK could form for a long time that met the requirements of the IOC, namely to include at least five sports associations. Only in August 2015 did South Sudan become the 206th member state of the IOC. The first South Sudanese to compete in the Olympic Games without representing Sudan was marathon runner Guor Marial , who started as an Independent Olympic Participant in London in 2012 .

South Sudan's Olympic debut took place in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro with three athletes. In addition to the official team, five other athletes from South Sudan were able to take part in Rio de Janeiro. They were part of the Refugee Olympic Team (ROT) and all lived in the Kakuma refugee camp in northwestern Kenya . The South Sudanese participants in the ten-person refugee team, three men and two women, were athletes James Chiengjiek, Yiech Biel, Paulo Amotun, Rose Lokonyen and Anjelina Lohalith.
