Olympic history of Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone , whose NOK , the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone , was founded in 1964 andrecognizedby the IOC in the same year, first took part in the 1968 Summer Olympics. In 1972 they did not participate, in 1976 they joined the boycott of the Montreal Games. So far, no athletes have been sent to the Winter Games. So far there have been no medalists.
Overview
Two athletes and a boxer formed the team that traveled to the Mexico City Games in 1968 . The first Olympian was the long-distance runner Alifu Massaquoi, who took part in the 10,000-meter run on October 13, 1964. At the Games in Munich in 1972 no athletes were sent. Sierra Leone followed the call to boycott the African countries and stayed away from the Montreal Games in 1976 .
In 1980, 14 athletes traveled to Moscow . For the first time women were there too. The first female Olympic athlete was the 800-meter runner Eugenia Osho-Williams on July 24, 1980. The first athlete who was able to advance in the course of his competition was the middleweight boxer Israel Cole, who reached the quarter-finals in Los Angeles 1984 . In Seoul in 1988 a cyclist and a weightlifter from Sierra Leone took part for the first time.
In 1996 in Atlanta a swimmer in the country started for the first time. In athletics, Eunice Barber reached fifth place in the heptathlon. Barber then changed his nationality and started for France in the following period. Since then, only a few athletes in the country have participated. The team size decreased to two participants in Athens in 2004 and London in 2012 . In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro there were again four athletes at the start.
