Tanzania , whose NOK , the Tanzania Olympic Committee , was founded in 1968 andrecognizedby the IOC in the same year, first took part in the 1964 Summer Olympic Games. In 1976 Tanzania joined the call to boycott the Montreal Games. So far, no athletes have been sent to the Winter Games.

Four athletes formed the first Tanzanian Olympic team in Tokyo in 1964 . The first Olympians on October 14, 1964 were the 800-meter runner Hassan Dyamwale and the 10,000-meter runner Pascal Mfyomi . In 1968 in Mexico City , a Tanzanian boxer took part for the first time. Tanzania followed calls for a boycott by African countries and stayed away from the 1976 Games in Montreal .

In Moscow 1980 , the largest Tanzanian Olympic team to date was sent with 41 participants. For the first time a Tanzanian national hockey team took part in the Olympic tournament. In addition, Tanzanian women were sent to the Olympic Games for the first time. The first Olympic athletes were the two 800-meter runners Mwinga Mwanjala and Lilian Nyiti on July 24, 1980 . In Moscow, Tanzania celebrated winning its first Olympic medals. The first medal winner was Filbert Bayi , who won silver over the 3000 meter obstacle course. A little later, Suleiman Nyambui won silver in the 5000 meter run.

A sixth place in the men's marathon by Juma Ikangaa was Tanzania's best result in 1984 in Los Angeles . In 1988 in Seoul , Ikangaa finished seventh. In Barcelona 1992 Andrew Sambu was able to qualify for the final over 5000 meters, there he finished 10th. Marko Hhawu achieved the only top result in Atlanta in 1996 with 12th place in the final race over 10,000 meters.

In 2000 in Sydney and 2004 in Athens only athletes were used. In Athens, Fabiano Joseph was tenth in the 10,000 meter final. Tanzanian swimmers competed for the first time in Beijing in 2008 . Joseph finished ninth in the 10,000 meter run, which this time was carried out in one lap

After an unsuccessful participation in London in 2012 , Alphonce Felix Simbu won 5th place in the marathon in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 . For the first time a Tanzanian judoka competed.
