Singapore , whose NOK , the Singapore National Olympic Council , was founded in 1947 andrecognizedby the IOC in 1948, has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 1948. In 1964 Singapore was a part of the State of Malaysia , athletes from Singapore competed in Tokyo for Malaysia. After gaining independence from Malaysia, Singapore returned to its own team in 1968. In 1980 the call to boycott the Moscow Games was followed. Athletes from Singapore have not yet participated in the winter games.

Singapore hosted the first Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2010. Young athletes from the city-state took part as hosts and also in the subsequent organization of the Youth Summer Games.

Overview

Singapore first took part in the Olympic Games in 1948 with a track and field athlete. The first Olympian was the high jumper Lloyd Valberg on July 30, 1948. On July 21, 1952, the track and field athlete Tang Pui Wah was the first woman in the country to take part in the Olympic Games.

In addition to athletics, the city-state's athletes were in the following sports swimming and weightlifting (from 1952), sailing, hockey, water polo and basketball (from 1956), shooting (from 1960), boxing (from 1972), judo (from 1976) , Fencing and badminton (from 1992), table tennis (from 1996), canoeing and gymnastics (from 2012) and rowing (from 2016).

The water polo team qualified for the Olympic tournament for the first time played in the preliminary round against the German team in 1956 and lost 5-1. After a 1: 7 against Italy and three more defeats in the final round, the team finished last. In 1960 the first Olympic medal was won. In weightlifting, Tan Howe Liang was second in the lightweight and won the silver medal.

Singapore only achieved success 40 years later at the Sydney 2000 Olympic table tennis tournament. In the women's singles, Chinese-born Jing Jun Hong reached the semi-finals. She lost both the semi-finals and the bronze medal game. Her teammate Li Jia Wei , also a native of China, was able to beat the Austrian Liu Jia , also a native of China, in the first final round .

In the 2004 badminton tournament in Athens, Ronald Susilo , a native of Indonesia, eliminated the German Björn Joppien in two sets in the second round of the men's singles . In the women's singles of the table tennis tournament, Li Jia Wei reached the semi-finals, but lost both the semi-finals and the bronze game, like Jing Jun Hong four years earlier.

In 2008, Li Jia Wei could not win a medal after reaching the semi-finals. However, she was able to win silver with the team, the first medal win in 48 years. The men's team lost 3-1 to the German team in the preliminary round and was eliminated with another defeat after the preliminary round. In swimming, Tao Li reached the finals over 100 meters butterfly and was fifth.

In 2012 in London there were two more medals in table tennis. In the women's singles, Feng Tianwei reached the semi-finals. In the round of 16, she defeated the Chinese Wu Jiaduo, who played for Germany, in six sets. The semi-final against the Chinese Ding Ning was lost in six sets, the bronze game against the Japanese Kasumi Ishikawa she won in four straight sets. The women's team lost 3-0 in the semi-finals against Japan, but won the bronze game against South Korea 3-0.

In 2016 Joseph Schooling achieved Singapore's first Olympic victory. The swimmer won the 100 meter butterfly competition. In table tennis, the women's team failed in the semifinals with 0: 3 to China. The bronze match against Japan was lost 3-1.

Youth games

Singapore hosted the first Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2010 . In February 2008 Singapore prevailed against the Russian capital Moscow with 53:44 votes . The first Youth Summer Games were held from August 14th to 26th, 2010. 3522 young athletes from 205 nations took part in 26 sports. The Games were opened by Singapore's President Sellapan Ramanathan . Show jumping rider Caroline Chew took the Olympic oath for the athletes, boxing referee Syed Abdul Kadir for the referees and swimming coach David Lim for the coaches. The Olympic flame was lit by the sailor Darren Choy.

A total of 129 youth athletes, 78 boys and 51 girls, from Singapore took part. Six medals, two silver and four bronze medals, could be won. The swimmer Rainer Ng won silver medals over 50 meters back and the table tennis player Isabelle Li in the women's singles. Bronze went to the taekwondo in Daryl Tan in the boys' bantamweight division and Shafinas Rahman in the girls' middleweight division, the sailor Audrey Yong in windsurfing and the boys' U-15 national football team. Another bronze medal was not included in the Singapore medal table. The archer Abdul Jaffar and his Turkish partner Begünhan Ünsal won bronze in the mixed teams.

In the second edition in 2014 in Nanjing , 18 youths, seven boys and eleven girls, took part. They competed in athletics, badminton, table tennis, diving, swimming, sailing, shooting, gymnastics and triathlon. Two Olympic victories could be celebrated in sailing. Bernie Chin won the boys and Samantha Yom the girls in boat class Byte CII. Another medal that is not included in Singapore's medal balance was won by sports shooter Xiu Yi Teh with her Egyptian partner Ahmed Mohamed. Both took silver in the mixed air pistol team.
