action

The 50-year-old Beate was once a top swimmer in the GDR , but gave up her career in favor of the family. Today she works in a large laundry and otherwise leads an unspectacular life as a housewife, mother and now also grandmother, in which there is no room left to realize her own dreams. She doesn't even get thanks and appreciation from her own children, although she does the laundry for her son - who lives at home with a pregnant friend - and takes care of her daughter Rike's child so that she can devote herself to her exam.

Then her patience breaks with a bang: presumably as a late consequence of anabolic steroids - doping she receives an initially devastating cancer diagnosis . Supported by her very different friend Henni, she throws her usual life upside down and has only one goal: to cross the English Channel .

She quits her job in the laundry so that she can devote herself fully to training. From now on, Beate also refuses to support her children. They are surprised, because initially they do not know anything about Beate's disease. Accompanied by a dinghy, she starts the crossing of the English Channel. When the boat falls behind due to a technical defect, Beate is briefly in danger when she gets caught in a drift net. But she is caught again and her friend encourages her, as the coast is already in sight. Beate comes ashore. Exhausted and happy, she realizes that you can do anything.

criticism

“Not an easy topic that Marc Rensing is tackling here, but which he has implemented sensitively, humorously and without being dismayed. […] Marc Rensings film and its great actors were cheered at the premiere in Hof. Rightly. "

“Steffi Kühnert in her first real leading role (...) hits her audience in the heart, with disarming naturalness, with an unsurpassed laconic tone and a charm that is as brittle as it is irresistible. Full of energy, she drives this, her film, which is about the fact that it is never too late to start a new life and that the journey is the goal. (...) The result was actually a classic adventure film (...) - an exciting game about a more or less lonely heroine, (...) wonderful cinemascope pictures by Tom Fährmann. "
