National Heritage Area
As National Heritage Area (NHA) in the United States, special areas are designated by the federal congress that are subject to special protection under the aspect of monument preservation . This applies in particular to places of historical or cultural-historical importance. The National Park Service (NPS) is responsible for managing the protected areas .
background
National Heritage Area (NHA) are areas in which natural, cultural and historical components together form an important landscape from the point of view of the federal government of the United States . The designation of an area requires its own federal law, which the United States Congress passes.
The NHAs are not protected areas in the strict sense of the word, but are operated, among other things, by public-private partnerships (PPP) and are designed to work with residents and visitors to define the respective historical and cultural focus and make it tangible.
Although the areas are administered by the National Park Service, they are not owned by the National Park Service and are not managed as organizational units of the NPS. The NPS sees itself more as a partner organization of the protected areas, for which it offers technical support and to which it distributes federal funds, which amount to between 150,000 and 750,000 US dollars per year, depending on the area .
Economic impact
An analysis of the impact of Nhas on the economic performance of protected areas showed that all areas annually 12.9 billion along dollars contribute to the economic output of the United States. They provide 148,000 jobs and contribute $ 1.2 billion annually to US federal tax revenue. This is attributed in particular to the fact that the administrations of the areas work closely with local service providers and companies. A major source of income is the tourism .
