Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area is one of the federal government of the United States declared National Heritage Area in parts of Pennsylvania , West Virginia , Maryland and Virginia in the eastern United States . This designation creates a framework that interprets and promotes the cultural and historical character of the region, with an emphasis on the region's role in the Civil War and the preservation of the environment and buildings. The National Heritage Area extends from Gettysburg in the north to Monticello in the south and is supported by the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership, which also includes the Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway. The area is roughly on the stretch of Old Carolina Road.

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership is a non-profit organization whose goal is to raise awareness of history in the Gettysburg – Monticello corridor. It includes more than 35 municipal, commercial, and non-profit organizations.

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area, established by the United States Congress in 2008, is a program that has been linked to the National Park Service . It includes 15 counties in four states . A National Scenic Byway runs through the area. These include World Heritage Sites , 49 Historic Districts, nine residences of former US presidents , 13 national parks, hundreds of African-American and Native American heritage sites, 30 historic Main Streets, sites of the Revolutionary War , the French and Indian Wars , the War of 1812 and the largest collection of Civil War sites nationwide.

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area includes Adams County in Pennsylvania , Frederick and Carroll Counties and the eastern part of Washington County in Maryland , the area around Harpers Ferry i, Jefferson County and Loudoun , Fauquier , Culpeper , Orange , Albemarle , Greene , Madison, and Rappahannock Counties, and portions of Fairfax , Prince William, and Spotsylvania Counties in Virginia.

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Heritage Area was formed on May 8, 2008 by Public Law 110-229, the Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008 .

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway is a roughly 205 km long road that runs through the National Heritage Area. Once known as Old Carolina Road, the road runs through three of the four states and includes sections of US Highway 15 , Virginia State Route 231 , Virginia State Route 20, and Virginia State Route 53 in the states of Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. It is one of 150 scenic byways designated nationwide by the United States Department of Transportation .
