Luxembourg , whose NOK , the Comité Olympique et Sportif Luxembourgeois , was founded in 1912, has participated in almost all summer games since 1912. Luxembourg was first represented at the Winter Games in 1928.
Only in the 1932 Summer Games in Los Angeles did Luxembourg not take part. Luxembourg did not support the boycott of the Games in Moscow in 1980, but did not participate under its national flag , but under the Olympic flag . To date, Luxembourg has only sent delegations with few participants at the Winter Games on an irregular basis.
A total of 465 participants were sent. Luxembourgish athletes won a total of four medals.
When Michel Théato that at the games in 1900 in Paris Marathon was victorious, only became apparent later that this only possessed Luxembourg nationality. Previously it was assumed that he was French. The IOC is still evaluating its victory for France today.
The first official medal winner was weightlifter Joseph Alzin in 1920 , who won the silver medal in the heavyweight division . In 1952, the athlete won Josy Barthel when run over 1500 meters , the second medal for Luxembourg at the Olympic Games with gold. At the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville, two more silver medals were added, which Marc Girardelli won in the giant slalom and the Super-G.
