Young athletes have taken part in all the Youth Olympic Games (summer and winter) that have been held so far. Until the name change on February 13, 2019, North Macedonia used the name Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) due to the dispute over the name of Macedonia with Greece .
Before North Macedonia gained independence, the country's athletes took part in the Yugoslav team in the Olympic Games. Since the North Macedonian NOK had not yet been founded, there was the opportunity for athletes in the country to compete as independent Olympic participants at the Winter Games in Albertville and the Summer Games in Barcelona in 1992, together with other athletes from the former Yugoslavia .
