Papua New Guinea , whose NOK , the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee , was founded in 1973, has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 1976. With the exception of the boycotted games in 1980, athletes were sent to all subsequent summer games. No athlete from Papua New Guinea has participated in the Winter Games. Young athletes have been sent to both of the youth summer games held so far.
Athletes in Papua New Guinea could not win medals.
General overview
Olympic games
Papua New Guinea's first Olympic team consisted of athletes, boxers and a shooter in Montreal in 1976. In the following years, the country's athletes participated in the sports of sailing and weightlifting (since 1988), swimming (since 2000), taekwondo (since 2008) and judo (since 2012).
The country's first Olympians were shooter Trevan Clough and boxer Tumat Sogolik on July 18, 1976. The first woman in Papua New Guinea at the Olympic Games was the athlete Iammogapi Launa on August 3, 1984, who competed in the heptathlon.
The greatest success at the Olympic Games was achieved by the swimmer Ryan Pini in Beijing in 2008. Over 100 meters dolphin he reached the final and finished eighth. In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, weightlifter Morea Baru finished sixth in the featherweight division.
Youth Olympic Games
Papua New Guinea took part in the 2010 Summer Youth Games in Singapore with 21 young people . Three boys and 18 girls competed in athletics, soccer, swimming and weightlifting. The sprinter John Rivan won the bronze medal with the mixed relay Oceania with four runners from four nations. This medal is not included in the medal table of Papua New Guinea. The weightlifter Steven Kari finished fourth in the light heavyweight division.
In 2014 in Nanjing , 24 teenage athletes, four boys and 20 girls, took part. They competed in athletics, soccer, swimming, weight lifting, and sailing.
