Overview

Summer games

The first Qatari Olympic team in 1984 consisted of track and field athletes, marksmen and a soccer team. The members of the soccer team were also the first Qatari athletes to compete in the Olympic Games on July 29, 1984. Surprisingly, they scored 2-2 against France. After two defeats, however, Qatar was eliminated. The first individual athletes in the country at the Olympics were the marksmen Sulaiman Mohamed and Jadaan Al-Shammari, who competed on July 30, 1984 with the small-bore rifle in the prone position.

In the following years, Qatari athletes went to the sports of sailing (since 1988), table tennis (since 1996), weightlifting and swimming (since 2000), archery, Frechten and Taekwondo (since 2008), beach volleyball, horse riding, boxing, handball and judo (since 2016) at the start.

The discussions about the participation of Qatari women in the Olympic Games and the naturalization practice sparked particular controversy. After the 2008 Summer Games, Qatar was one of three countries (alongside Saudi Arabia and Brunei) that had never used women in the Olympics. In addition, Qatar naturalized athletes from abroad and used them in international competitions, a practice for which Bahrain was also known.

In 1992 in Barcelona, Qatar celebrated its first medal win. The athlete Mohamed Suleiman won bronze in the 1,500 meter run. His teammate Ibrahim Ismail finished seventh over 400 meters. The Qatari soccer team was able to qualify for the quarter-finals, but was eliminated after a 2-0 draw against Poland. In 1996 in Atlanta, Suleiman was ninth over 1,500 meters.

The first success of Qatar's naturalization policy was seen in Sydney 2000. The Bulgarian Said Saif Asaad , born Angel Popov , became a Qatari citizen in 1999; he and seven teammates had been bought by the Qatari Weightlifting Association for a million dollars. At the competitions in Sydney he won bronze in the heavyweight division. In the super heavyweight division, Jaber Saeed Salem was fourth. Salem, who also came to Qatar in 1999, was born Jani Marschokow in Bulgaria. In athletics, Khamis Abdullah Seifeddine, a native of Sudan, reached 10th place over 3000 meters obstacle. Another naturalized athlete was the marathon runner Rashid Jamal, an Ethiopian born Gemeshu Woyesha. The skeet shooter Nasser Al-Attiyah took 6th place.

Another weightlifter from Bulgaria started for Qatar in 2004 in Athens. Nader Sufyan Abbas was born as Andrei Ivanov in Bulgaria. Starting for Qatar he reached 8th place in the middleweight division. In athletics, Musa Amer, born in Kenya as Moses Kipkirui, ran over 3000 meters in 4th place. Skeet shooter Nasser Al-Attiyah also took 4th place. In 2008, James Kwalia C'Kurui , another native of Kenya , started for Qatar. He finished 8th over 5000 meters, as was Ahmad Hassan Abdullah , born Albert Chepkurui in Kenya, over 10,000 meters and Abubaker Ali Kamal over 3000 meters obstacle.

In 2012, under pressure from the IOC, a Qatari athlete started at the Olympic Games for the first time. The marksman Bahya Al-Hamad was the first woman in Qatar at the Olympics on July 28, 2012. Her teammate Nasser Al-Attiya won the bronze medal in skeet shooting. Rashid Al-Athba was seventh in the double trap. The athlete Mutaz Essa Barshim also won bronze in the high jump.

Barshim won silver in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. He is the only Qatari multiple medalist. Ashraf El-Seify achieved 6th place in the hammer throw. In Rio, Nasser Al-Attiya competed for the sixth time at the Olympic Games. The show jumper Ali bin Chalid Al Thani was able to take 6th place in the individual ranking on his horse First Division 9 . The native Chinese Ping Li was used in table tennis. The use of the Qatari handball team was particularly controversial. of the 15 players nominated, only four were native Qataris, the rest of the team consisted of players from Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Spain, Cuba, Egypt and Syria. The team qualified for the quarter-finals, but failed there with 22:34 to Germany.

Youth games

Four boys and two girls competed in the sports of track and field at the first 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games . Horseback riding, shooting, swimming and gymnastics. The athlete Hamza Driouch won the silver medal in the 1000 meter run.

At the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing , 21 young people, 19 boys and two girls, took part in athletics, horse riding, handball, gymnastics, shooting and swimming. No medals were won.
