Libya , whose NOK , al-Ladschna al-ulimbiyya al-libiyya , was founded in 1962 andrecognizedby the IOC in1963, has participated in the Summer Olympics since 1968. In 1972 no athletes were sent. In 1976 Libya joined the boycott of African states. In 1984 the Los Angeles Games were boycotted. So far, no athletes in the country have participated in the winter games. So far no medal could be won.

Overview

In 1964 in Tokyo the Libyan flag was shown for the first time at the opening ceremony. After the celebration, the country's only athlete, a marathon runner, was withdrawn from the competition. Only at the next summer games, in 1968 in Mexico City , did the country's athletes take part in Olympic competitions for the first time. The first Olympic athlete was the hurdler Mohamed Asswai Khalifa.

No team was sent to the 1972 Munich Games . Libya responded to calls by African countries to boycott the 1976 Montreal Games . The largest team in Libya to date took part in Moscow in 1980. For the first time, the 32 participants included cyclists, swimmers, weightlifters and a volleyball team. The swimmer Nadia Fezzani became Libya's first female Olympian on July 20, 1980.

Libya followed the Soviet Union's call for a boycott and stayed away from the 1984 Los Angeles Games . In 1988 in Seoul Libyan athletes were again used. In 1992 in Barcelona judoka and table tennis players took part for the first time, in 2000 a Taekwondo in Sydney , in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro a rower and an archer.
