Uganda , whose NOK , the Uganda Olympic Committee , was founded in 1950 andrecognizedby the IOC in 1956, first took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics. In 1976 Uganda joined the call to boycott the Montreal Games. So far, no athletes have been sent to the Winter Games.
Overview
1956 to 1996
Uganda's first Olympic team consisted of three athletes in Melbourne in 1956 . The 100-meter runner Ben Nduga and the high jumper Patrick Etolu were Uganda's first Olympians on November 23, 1956. In 1960 in Rome , Ugandan boxers started for the first time. 1964 in Tokyo Ernest Mabwa reached the quarterfinals in the welterweight division. In Tokyo, the 100-meter runner Irene Muyanga became the first Ugandan woman to take part in the Olympic Games.
Uganda's first medal wins followed in 1968 in Mexico City . The first medal winner was the boxer Eridadi Mukwanga with silver in bantamweight. Leo Rwabwogo won a bronze medal in the flyweight division. The lightweight Mohamed Muruli reached the quarterfinals as did the light heavyweight David Jackson. In athletics, Amos Omolo reached the final over 400 meters and was eighth.
Uganda's most successful participation was at the 1972 Munich Games . John Akii-Bua became the first Ugandan Olympic champion in the 400 meter hurdles competition. Boxer Leo Rwabwogo won a silver flyweight medal, becoming Uganda's first multiple medalist. James Odwori reached the quarter-finals in light flyweight. In Munich, a Ugandan hockey team took part in the Olympic tournament for the first time.
Uganda followed the call for a boycott by African countries and stayed away from the Montreal Games in 1976 . In 1980 Moscow boxer John Mugabi won silver in the welterweight division. The quarterfinals reached John Siryakibbe in the bantamweight and Peter Odhiambo in the middleweight division.
In Los Angeles 1984 , Ugandan cyclists, swimmers and weightlifters took part for the first time. In athletics, the men's 400 meter relay qualified for the final and finished seventh. In boxing, Charles Lubulwa reached the quarterfinals in the featherweight division and Dodovic Owiny in the heavyweight division. The only top result in 1988 in Seoul was reaching the quarterfinals by the middleweight boxer Franco Wanyama.
Uganda was also unsuccessful in Barcelona in 1992 , when a Ugandan table tennis player competed for the first time. In 1996 in Atlanta , however, the first medal win in 16 years was celebrated. The athlete Davis Kamoga won bronze in the 400-meter run.
2000 until today
In 2000 in Sydney a Ugandan archer competed for the first time. 2004 in Athens was all about Ugandan long-distance runners. In the 10,000 meter run, Boniface Kiprop finished fourth and missed the bronze medal by a little less than three seconds. In boxing, the lightweight Sam Rukundo was only eliminated in the quarterfinals.
In Beijing 2008 Moses Kipsiro reached fourth place in the final of the 5000 meter run. Benjamin Kiplagat was ninth in the 3000 meter obstacle course. A Ugandan badminton player took part for the first time in Beijing. In London in 2012 won Stephen Kiprotich the marathon and became the second Olympic champions Uganda. Joshua Cheptegei delivered the only top results in Uganda in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro with 6th place over 10,000 meters and 8th place over 5000 meters.
