Overview
Belize's first participation in the Olympic Games took place in Mexico City in 1968 under the name British Honduras (IOC abbreviation HBR). The seven-person team consisted of athletes, cyclists, marksmen and weightlifters. The first Olympians on October 15, 1968 were the athlete Colin Thurton in the 200-meter run and the weightlifter Mario Mendoza in the lightweight. Also in 1972 in Munich the team started as British Honduras , with only one participant, a marksman, at the start. The name Belize has been used since 1976 in Montreal . Belize followed the US call for a boycott and stayed away from the 1980 Moscow Games.
In 1984 in Los Angeles, the Belizean team started with eleven athletes, including a boxer for the first time. This was the largest Olympic team in the country to date (2017). At the Barcelona Games in 1992, cyclist Camille Solis was the first woman from Belize to compete in the street race on July 26, 1992 at the Olympic Games.
Athletes from Belize were unsuccessful in all subsequent Olympic Games. A Taekwondoin was used for the first time in Beijing in 2008 and a judoka in London in 2012.
