Liechtenstein first took part in the Olympic Games in1936. For the first time, athletes from the Principality competedfor their countryat the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .
Liechtenstein sent a total of 132 participants. The youngest participant was the alpine ski racer August Wolfinger , who competed in the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck at the age of 14. The oldest athlete was the shooter Theobald Schurte in Los Angeles in 1984 , who took part at the age of 44. Xaver Frick , one of the founders of the NOK for Liechtenstein , is the only athlete who took part in both summer and winter games ( 1936 in Berlin as a track and field athlete, 1948 in St. Moritz as a cross-country skier).
All ten medals were won at winter games in alpine skiing . Liechtenstein is thus the only nation that won all of its medals at the Winter Games. Liechtenstein has won the most Olympic medals in relation to the number of inhabitants worldwide. The most successful female athlete with four medals (2 | 1 | 1) is ski racer Hanni Wenzel .
Participation
With two exceptions, Liechtenstein took part in all Summer Olympic Games . Only in 1956 was it not possible to participate in Melbourne because of the high travel costs . In 1980 , Liechtenstein joined the boycott of the Moscow Games to protest against the invasion of Afghanistan by Soviet troops .
The country took part in the Olympic Winter Games 15 times.
