In 1963 Indonesia hosted GANEFO , the Games of the New Emerging Force . The IOC said that athletes who took part in these games would be banned from the next Olympics. In 1964 Indonesia could not send athletes to the Tokyo Games. In 1980 the Moscow Games were boycotted. So far, no Indonesian athletes have participated in the winter games. Young athletes have been sent to both of the youth summer games that have been held so far.

Overview

The first Indonesian Olympic team consisted of a track and field athlete, a swimmer and a weightlifter in 1952. At the following summer games, Indonesian athletes competed in football, fencing and shooting (from 1956), boxing, cycling and sailing (from 1960), archery and diving (from 1972), table tennis, tennis and wrestling (from 1988), badminton and canoeing and judo (from 1992), beach volleyball (from 1996), taekwondo (from 2000) and rowing (from 2004).

On July 20, 1952, the track and field athlete Maram Sudjarmoto became Indonesia's first Olympic athlete. On November 29, 1956, swimmer Ria Tobing became the first Indonesian woman to take part in the Olympic Games.

There was no success until 1972. It was not until 1976 that the archer Leane Sunjar was able to secure a top 10 place with 9th place. In 1984 the weightlifter Maman Suryaman could reach fifth place in the flyweight division. In 1988 Dirdja Wihardja was fourth in the bantamweight division. In Seoul, the women's archery team won silver, Indonesia's first Olympic medal. In the individual ranking, Nurfitriyana Saiman-Lantang came in 9th.

When badminton became an Olympic sport in 1992, Indonesian players initially dominated the competitions. The first Indonesian Olympic champions were badminton players. In the men's singles, Indonesians won all three medals. Gold went to Alan Budikusuma , silver to Ardy Wiranata and bronze to Hermawan Susanto . Eddy Hartono and Rudy Gunawan won silver in doubles . In the women's category , Susi Susanti , the wife of the men's winner, became the individual Olympic champion. In archery, Hendra Setijawan reached 6th place in the men's individual ranking.

In badminton, Indenesian athletes won medals in Atlanta in 1996. While Heryanto Arbi failed in the match for the bronze medal in the men's singles , the duo Rexy Mainaky and Ricky Subagja became Olympic champions in doubles. Antonius Ariantho and Denny Kantono won bronze. In the women’s category , Mia Audina won silver in the singles, Susi Susanti won bronze.

Badminton players won three medals in Sydney in 2000. Candra Wijaya and Tony Gunawan became Olympic champions in doubles. Gunawan started for the USA 12 years later. Hendrawan won silver in singles . The original third place, the Belarusian Anastassija Nowikawa , was convicted of doping and disqualified in summer 2016. Rumbewas was awarded the bronze medal.

In 2012 in London there was a scandal in the badminton tournament in which Indonesian players were also involved. Greysia Polii and Meiliana Jauhari were disqualified in women's doubles on suspicion of match-fixing. In the last group game they were obviously unwilling to win their game. In the event of a defeat, they would have met supposedly weaker opponents in the following round, which was played in the knockout system. Two couples from South Korea and one from the People's Republic of China were also removed from the competition. For the first time since badminton became an Olympic sport, no medals could be won. The mixed doubles Tontowi Ahmad and Lilyana Natsir lost the match for the bronze medal. The only medals in London were won by weightlifters. In the men's featherweight division, Eko Yuli Irawan won another bronze medal. Triyatno had switched to the lightweight and could win silver there. In the women's featherweight category, Citra Febrianti reached fourth place. The original winner, Kazakh Sülfija Tschinschanlo , tested positive for doping in 2016 and was subsequently disqualified. The third placed, Cristina Iovu from Moldova, was doped and disqualified. Febrianti advanced to the silver rank.

In Rio de Janeiro 2016 Lilyana Natsir and her partner Tontowi Ahmad became Olympic champion in mixed badminton doubles. In weightlifting, Eko Yuli Irawan won silver in featherweight. In the women's race, Sri Wahyuni Agustiani won silver in the flyweight division.
