Olympic history of Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast , whose NOK , the Comité National Olympique de Côte d'Ivoire , was founded in 1962 andrecognizedby the IOC in1963, has participated in the Summer Olympics since 1964. Except for the boycotted Moscow Games in 1980, athletes were sent to all summer games. No athletes from Landes have taken part in the winter games.
Overview
1964 to 1976
The Ivory Coast first took part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964. The country's first Olympic athlete was lightweight boxer Gabriel Achy Assi on August 11, 1964. The sprinter Gaoussou Koné provided the only top result. He reached the final in the 100-meter run and came in sixth.
1968 in Mexico City , the Ivorian team was unsuccessful. For the first time, canoeists were at the start for the country. 1972 in Munich and 1976 in Montreal only athletes took part. Besides Senegal , the Ivory Coast was the only African state that did not follow the boycott of African countries at the Montreal Games. In Montreal, Célestine N'Drin was the first Ivorian woman to compete in the Olympic Games.
1980 to 1996
Ivory Coast followed the US boycott of the Moscow Games in 1980 . A judoka was used for the first time in Los Angeles in 1984 . The first medal was won in Los Angeles. The sprinter Gabriel Tiacoh won silver in the 400 meter run.
1988 in Seoul there were two premieres. The women's national handball team was the first Ivorian team to take part in the Olympic Games. An Ivorian tennis player also took part for the first time. In Barcelona in 1992 there was a final for the men's 100 meter relay. In the final they finished eighth. At the 1996 Atlanta Games , however, the Ivorian team remained unsuccessful.
Since 2000
In Sydney 2000 an Ivorian Taekwondo, a swimmer and a freestyle wrestler started for the first time. The taekwondo fighter N'Guessan Sebastien Konan reached the semi-finals in the welterweight division, in which he failed against the later silver medalist Faissal Ebnoutalib from Germany.
Only five athletes were sent to the 2004 Games in Athens and were unsuccessful. It was the smallest Ivorian delegation ever. In Beijing 2008 , the men's national soccer team took part in the Olympic tournament. The team reached 6th place after losing 2-0 to Nigeria in the quarterfinals.
An Ivorian archer took part for the first time in London in 2012 . The sprinter Murielle Ahouré reached the finals twice. She finished seventh over 100 meters and sixth over 200 meters.
The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games turned out to be the most successful Olympic participation in the Ivory Coast. For the first time an Ivorian female fencer took part in the Olympic Games. There were three finals in athletics. Ben Youssef Meïté was sixth over 100 meters, Marie Josée Ta Lou fourth both over 100 and 200 meters. The participants in the Olympic Taekwondo competition were even more successful. In the women's category , Ruth Gbagbi won the bronze medal in the welterweight division. In the men's race, Cheick Sallah Cissé became the first Olympic champion in Ivory Coast with his victory, also in the welterweight division.
IOC member
Lassana Palenfo , President of the Ivorian NOK, was elected an IOC member in 2000. In 2012 he became an honorary member of the IOC and was awarded the Olympic silver medal .
