Nicaragua , whose NOK , the Comité Olímpico Nicaragüense , was founded in 1959, has been taking part in the Summer Olympics since 1968. Only the 1988 Summer Games were not played. No athlete from Nicaragua has taken part in the Winter Games. Young athletes took part in the youth summer games held so far. Medals have not yet been won.
In 1980 , 13-year-old swimmer Garnet Charwat, the youngest female athlete in Nicaragua, took part. The oldest participant was Walter Martínez, a marksman in 2008 at the age of 40 .
Overview
Summer games
Nicaragua's first Olympic team participated in the 1968 Mexico City Games. The team consisted of athletes, boxers and weightlifters. The boxers Hermes Silva and Alofonso Molina and the athletes Juan Argüello and Francisco Menocal were the first Olympians in their country on October 13, 1968. The sprinter Russell Carrero was on September 1, 1972 the first woman in Nicaragua at the Olympic Games. Nicaragua boycotted the Seoul Games in 1988 to show solidarity with North Korea.
Nicaraguan athletes took part in the following sports judo (since 1972), cycling and swimming (since 1976), wrestling and shooting (since 1992), baseball (since 1996) and taekwondo (since 2000).
Nicaragua was only successful in the no longer played baseball. At the 1996 tournament in Atlanta, the country was fourth in the preliminary round and was thus qualified for the semi-finals. The semi-final game against Cuba was lost 8-1, the bronze game against the USA 3:10.
Youth games
Three young athletes, two boys and one girl, competed in swimming and wrestling at the first 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore .
In 2014 in Nanjing , four Nicaraguan athletes, two boys and two girls, took part. They competed in athletics, swimming, wrestling, and weight lifting. Medals could not be won at either event.
