The Republic of China , which existed from 1912 to 1949, participated in three Summer Olympic Games . The Chinese National Olympic Committee , recognized as NOK in 1922 (recognized as NOK according to another source only in 1931), was founded in 1921 as the National Amateur Athletic Federation and was invited to participate in the 1932 world competitions.
The teams consisted of Chinese athletes from Taiwan along with athletes from mainland China. Between 1912 and 1928, athletes from the island of Taiwan could start for Japan because Japan occupied the island after the Sino-Japanese War of 1894/95 . After the Kuomintang withdrew to the island of Taiwan at the end of the Chinese civil war , China was represented by Taiwan at the Olympic Games. Because of this, the People's Republic of China , founded in 1949, did not take part. After the boycott of the 1976 and 1980 Games, an agreement was reached whereby both Chinese teams could take part in the Olympic Games. The People's Republic of China participated as China . Taiwan adopted the name Chinese Taipei .
