Olympic history of Antigua and Barbuda
- | - | - |
Antigua and Barbuda has participated in the Summer Olympics since 1976. With the exception of 1980, the country competed in all subsequent summer games. Participation in the Winter Olympic Games was waived. Medals have not yet been won.
Olympic movement
The Antigua and Barbudas Olympic movement began to form in the mid-1960s. Five years after the West Indian Federation , to which the two islands belonged, took part in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome , Antigua wanted to send its own delegation to the VIII British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston (Jamaica). To this end, the Antigua Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (AOCGA) was founded in 1965 and the following year Antigua made its debut on the international sports stage at the Commonwealth Games. In 1968, the AOCGA submitted an application to the International Olympic Committee for the first time to join the Olympic family. However, the request was not in accordance with the statutes of the IOC and was rejected. It was not until 1975 that a second attempt was made after a reorganization of the AOCGA. The IOC accepted the application at its 77th session on the sidelines of the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck and declared Antigua a provisional member. During the 78th session of the IOC in July 1976 in Montreal , the AOCGA received its full recognition.
Overview
The US Virgin Islands' Olympic debut began in Montreal in 1976 with a team of track and field athletes and cyclists. The first Olympian was the cyclist Donald Christian on July 20, 1976. The British colony followed the US call for a boycott and stayed away from the 1980 Moscow Summer Games .
1984 in Los Angeles with the cyclist Elisha Hughes, the first woman of the now independent island state competed in the Olympic Games. A sailor from the country was there for the first time in Los Angeles, and boxer for the first time in Seoul .
In the period that followed, there were still no top placements. In 1996 in Atlanta canoeists started the country for the first time, in 2004 in Athens swimmers. It was not until 2008 in Beijing that an athlete from the country was able to move into focus. The athlete Brendan Christian reached the semi-finals in the 200-meter run. The same result was achieved in 2012 in London by Daniel Bailey over 100 meters.
