Palau , whose NOK , the Palau National Olympic Committee , was founded in 1997, has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 2000. So far, no athlete from the Pacific Islands has participated in the Winter Games. Young athletes have been sent to both of the youth summer games held so far.
Athletes in Palau could not win medals.
General overview
Olympic games
The first Olympic team in Palau in Sydney in 2000 consisted of athletes, swimmers and a weightlifter. Weightlifter Valerie Pedro was the first female athlete in Palau to participate in the Olympic Games on September 19, 2000. The first man, swimmer Anlloyd Samuel, started a day later.
A wrestler took part for the first time in 2004, a judoka in 2012 and a canoeist in 2016.
Youth Olympic Games
Palau took part in the 2010 Summer Youth Games in Singapore with four teenagers . Two boys and two girls competed in athletics, swimming, and weightlifting.
In 2014 in Nanjing , three teenage athletes, two boys and one girl, took part. They competed in athletics, swimming and wrestling.
IOC members
In 2017, Minister of Culture Baklai Temengil was elected a member of the IOC. Temengil had recently been elected first Vice President of the Oceania National Olympic Committee .
