Olympic history of Zimbabwe
3 | 4th | 1 |
The Olympic Zimbabwe's history begins in 1934 with the establishment of NOCs , the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee . The NOK was only recognized by the IOC in 1959 . The British colony only became independent in 1980 under the name Zimbabwe . Before independence, athletes took part in the Summer Olympics in 1928, 1960 and 1964 under the name Rhodesia .
136 participants, 45 of them women, have won eight medals since 1980. With three gold, four silver and one bronze medal, Zimbabwe ranks 63rd in the all-time medal table of the Olympic Games .
Participation in the Olympic Games
Already at the Olympic debut at the Games in Moscow in 1980 there was the first medal to celebrate, which was also the first Olympic victory. The Zimbabwean women's hockey team was surprisingly Olympic champion with three wins and two draws.
The following five summer games were unsuccessful for the Zimbabwean Olympic team. Only the boxer Ndaba Dube , who fought fifth in the bantamweight division in Los Angeles in 1984 , achieved a top placement. 1992 in Barcelona with the swimmer Ivor Le Roux , the so far youngest participant in Zimbabwe, competed in the Olympic Games. On July 26, 1992, Le Roux was 16 years and 155 days old at the start of the 200 meter freestyle. On August 1, 1992, the rower Susanne Standish-White, the so far oldest participant in Zimbabwe, started the women's double scull .
It was not until 2004 in Athens that another medal could be celebrated. The swimmer Kirsty Coventry won a complete set of medals, first silver over 100 meters back (August 16, 2004), then bronze over 200 meters individual medley (August 17, 2004) and on August 20, 2004 gold over 200 meters back.
In Beijing in 2008 , Coventry even won four medals. On August 10, 2008, she won silver in the 400 meter medley. Two more silver medals followed: on August 12th over 100 meters back and one day later over 200 meters medals. With a new world record, Coventry finally swam her second Olympic victory over 200 meters back on August 16. The athletes narrowly missed two other medals. The long jumper Ngoni Makusha jumped 8.19 meters in the final on August 18th and missed the bronze medal by just one centimeter. Brian Dzingai ran on August 20th in the men's 200 meter final with 20.22 seconds in 4th place and missed the bronze medal by 0.24 seconds.
No medals were won in London in 2012 , so Kirsty Coventry remained the most successful participant in Zimbabwe. In 2014 , an athlete from Zimbabwe took part in the Winter Olympics for the first time.
