São Tomé and Príncipe , whose NOK , the Comité Olímpico de São Tomé and Príncipe , was founded in 1979, has been taking part in the Summer Olympics since 1996. Participation in winter games has so far been waived. Athletes from the island state have not yet been able to win medals.

Overview

The Olympic history of the island state of São Tomé and Príncipe began with two athletes in Atlanta in 1996 . The country's first Olympian was sprinter Odair Baia on July 26, 1996. On the same day, his team-mate Sortelina Pires was the first woman in the country to start.

There were no top placements in the period that followed. In Beijing 2008 a canoeist took part for the first time. By reaching the semi-finals in the single-Canadian Rio de Janeiro 2016 , Buly Triste ensured the best result for an Olympian from São Tomé and Príncipe.
