Senegal , whose NOK , the Comité National Olympique et Sportif Sénégalais , was founded in 1961 andrecognizedby the IOC in1963, first took part in the 1964 Summer Olympics. Besides the Ivory Coast, Senegal isthe only African country that did not take part in the 1976 boycott. There was also no boycott of the 1980 Games.
Athletes from Senegal also took part in the Winter Olympics. Delegations have been sent five times since 1984.
Overview
Summer games
Twelve athletes formed Senegal's first Olympic team at the 1964 Tokyo Games . The 100-meter runners Bassirou Doumbia and Abdoulaye N'Diaye and the 400-meter hurdler Mamadou Sarr were Senegal's first Olympians on October 14, 1964. 1968 in Mexico City for the first time a Senegalese basketball team started. The athlete Amadou Gakou reached the final over 400 meters. He finished fourth, 0.6 seconds behind, in third place.
Boxers, judoka and wrestlers took part for the first time in Munich in 1972 . The athlete Mansour Dia reached 6th place in the triple jump. Senegal was one of the few African countries that did not participate in the boycott of the Montreal Games in 1976 . On July 23, 1976, Ndew Niang was the first Senegalese woman to take part in the Olympic Games. Senegal also failed to comply with the US call to boycott the 1980 Moscow Games .
Senegalese athletes first competed in sailing and shooting in Los Angeles in 1984 . The 400-meter hurdler Amadou Dia Ba qualified for the final and finished fifth. In Seoul in 1988 he won the first and so far only Senegal Olympic medal with silver. In Seoul, swimmers from the country were represented for the first time.
After an unsuccessful participation in Barcelona in 1992 , the men's 400-meter relay in Atlanta in 1996 again achieved a top result with fourth place. The Sydney 2000 games were again unsuccessful. Fencers and table tennis players were used for the first time in Athens in 2004 , and canoeists and taekwondoin in Beijing in 2008 . In Beijing, the long jumper Ndiss Kaba Badji reached the final and was sixth. In London 2012 , Senegalese football teams competed in the Olympic tournament for the first time.
Winter games
The first winter athlete in Senegal at the Olympic Games was the ski racer Lamine Guèye , who competed in Sarajevo in 1984 . He was also there in 1992 in Albertville and 1994 in Lillehammer .
