Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is a computer game of the Metal Gear Solid series , that of Kojima Productions developed and Konami released was. Like its predecessors, the game is a stealth shooter and was released on April 29, 2010 for PlayStation Portable . Although originally only appeared for portable game consoles, it is considered part of the main series. In February 2012 it was released as part of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection in a graphically higher-resolution version for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 .

action

Peace Walker is set on Costa Rica in 1974. The player controls Big Boss, who with his mercenary unit Militaires sans Frontières (MSF) takes action against the CIA, which is testing new weapon systems on the island. Among them is a gun runner named Peace Walker, which is equipped with nuclear weapons similar to Metal Gear.

Gameplay

The game is divided into several levels. Militaires sans Frontières has a main headquarters called Mother Base on an abandoned research platform in the Caribbean. It is the central point of contact in the game, from which the player sets off on the missions. These are divided into missions that contribute to the main storyline and additional missions that can be completed with human colleagues. The content of the missions is independent, but the procedure affects the further development of the Mother Base. For example, the guards stunned in the missions can be brought to Mother Base via a Fulton Recovery System, where they are first arrested and then made their own followers. Each soldier has different characteristics. With the additional staff, the Mother Base can be expanded, new research initiated, soldiers sent on missions and new missions unlocked for the player. The bosses are often military vehicles and weapon systems such as battle tanks and armored personnel carriers, helicopters or armored transporters, which can also be conquered to strengthen one's own military power.

Peace Walker was originally developed as Metal Gear Solid 5 and is the spiritual successor to Portable Ops on PSP , which already contained elements of basic construction and the recruitment of enemy soldiers. This concept was taken up again for the last offshoot of the series, The Phantom Pain . Peace Walker was designed by Hideo Kojima and was created with the participation of the Metal Gear Solid 4 development team .

On February 3rd, 2012 Konami released the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This included the games Metal Gear , Metal Gear 2 , Metal Gear Solid 2 including VR missions , Metal Gear Solid 3 and an HD Version by Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker . Peace Walker has been equipped with a cooperative online mode in this version. In the version of the collection later published for the PlayStation Vita under the same name, however, the game was not present.

reception

Meta-ratings
Database Rating
Metacritic 89/100

Peace Walker is often included in the main series. The game received mostly positive reviews and has a Metacritic value of 89. 1UP described the game as "saving the series from itself". Above all, the successful fusion of elements of western game design (e.g. taking over the camera control via the front buttons from Siphon Filter ) with eastern design philosophy (e.g. the cooperative boss fights in Monster Hunter ) were described as success factors. Compared to previous PSP titles in the series, Peace Walker simplified the controls and, after the less clear Metal Gear Solid 4, again explicitly focused on a clandestine and low-violence approach.

In Japan, 574,957 copies of the game were sold in two weeks.

At the Tokyo Game Show 2009, Peace Walker was named Best Game at the Fair and Best PSP Game . IGN recognized the game at the 2010 awards for the best PSP games in the categories of Game of the Year, Addicting Gameplay, Best Visual, Best Value, Best Narration, Best Co-op Game and Coolest Atmosphere.
