El Salvador , whose NOK , the Comité Olímpico de El Salvador , was founded in 1949, has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 1968. Except for the 1976 and 1980 games, athletes from the Central American state took part in all of the following summer games. El Salvador has not yet participated in the winter games. Young athletes have been sent to both of the youth summer games held so far.

The artist Pedro de Matheu took part in the Olympic art competitions in 1932. He submitted four of his works with the titles Discobole , Athlete at Rest , Diver and Javelin Thrower , but it is unclear which of the art disciplines he participated in. It is not noted of the nature of his works, whether paintings or statues.

The first Olympic team in El Salvador in 1968 consisted of athletes, cyclists, sailors, shooters, swimmers, weightlifters and a soccer team. The weightlifter Alex Martínez and the athletes Rafael Santos, Alfredo Cubías, Mauricio Jubis and Cecilia Sosa were the first Olympians in their country. The soccer team also had their first game that day.

In 1976 no team was sent to Montreal. In 1980 El Salvador joined the US boycott call and stayed away from Moscow for the Games. In 1984 a wrestler and two judoka took part in the Olympic tournaments for the first time, and in 1988 two boxers.

The cyclist Maureen Kaila achieved her first success in Atlanta in 1996, finishing 5th in the points race. In 2000 in Sydney an archer competed for the first time in the country, in 2008 in Beijing a rower and a tennis player. The marksman Luisa Maida achieved 8th place in Beijing with the sport pistol.

Youth games

El Salvador took part in the 2010 Summer Youth Games in Singapore with four young people . The two boys and two girls competed in four sports: fencing, gymnastics, rowing and table tennis.

In 2014 in Nanjing , eight young people took part. The swimmer Marcelo Acosta won the silver medal in the 400 meters freestyle. He finished fifth over 800 meters. The show jumper Sabrina Meza won the bronze medal with the mixed team from North America. This medal is credited to the medal balance of the mixed teams, it does not appear in the medal table of El Salvador. Meza achieved 4th place in the individual ranking
