Malaysia , whose NOK , the Olympic Council of Malaysia , was founded in 1953 andrecognizedby the IOC in1954, has participated in the Summer Olympic Games since 1964. In 1980 the call to boycott the Moscow Games was followed. Malaysian athletes took part in the winter games for the first time in 2018. Young athletes took part in both of the youth summer games that have been held so far.
In 1956 and 1960, the Malaysian NOK sent athletes to the Melbourne and Rome Games. While in 1956 the state of Sabah sent its own team under the name North Borneo (abbreviation NBO), the Malaysian team entered under the name Malaya (abbreviation MAL). In 1964, athletes from Singapore were also part of the Malaysian team, which from now on appeared as Malaysia with the IOC abbreviation MAS.
Overview
Summer games
61 athletes, including four women who competed in athletics, boxing, cycling, fencing, hockey, judo, shooting, swimming, weightlifting and wrestling, formed Malaysia's first Olympic team in 1964. At the following summer games, Malaysians also played football (from 1972), table tennis (from 1988), badminton (from 1992), canoeing and sailing (from 1996), gymnastics, taekwondo and diving (from 2000), archery (from 2004) and in golf (from 2016).
The first Olympians in Malaysia were on October 11, 1964, in addition to the members of the hockey team, the freestyle wrestlers Liang Soon Hin and Tham Kook Chin, the boxer Gopalan Ramakrishnan, the weightlifter Chua Phung Kim and the swimmers Tan Thuan Heng, Michael Eu and, as Malaysia's first woman , Marny Jolly.
The hockey team of Malaysia finished the preliminary group in 1964 in fifth place. She managed two wins and two draws in seven games, including a 0-0 win against West Germany, and was eliminated from the tournament. With only three draws in seven games, Malaysia was eliminated from bottom of the group in 1968.
In 1972, the team achieved group place 3. Four wins and one draw brought the team into the placement round for places five to eight. They lost 0-1 against the Federal Republic of Germany. Both placement games were lost, the team was eighth. For the first time, a soccer team was also qualified. In the preliminary round they played against the Federal Republic of Germany and lost 3-0. A 3-0 win over the USA and a 0-06 against Morocco meant third place in the group and thus the elimination.
In 1976 the hockey team managed two wins and qualified fourth in the group for the placement round. Again both games were lost, the team finished 8th. 1984 there was only one preliminary round win, all other four games were lost, u. a. against the Federal Republic of Germany with 0: 5. The game for 11th place against hosts USA was only decided 9: 8 in the penalty shootout after the game had ended 3: 3 after extra time.
Badminton became an Olympic sport in 1992. Malaysia was able to win the first Olympic medal here. The brothers Razif and Jalani Sidek won the bronze medal in men's doubles. In 1996, Rashid Sidek , the brother of the two 1992 medalists, won bronze in the men's singles. The men's doubles Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock won silver. The double Soo Beng Kiang and Tan Kim Her lost the game for bronze.
In 2000, Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah also failed in the game for bronze in the men's doubles. The men's hockey team lost 1-0 to Germany in the preliminary round and finished the preliminary round in group position 5. The tournament ended the team in 11th place. In 2004, cyclist Josieh Ng was sixth in the Keirin. In 2008, Lee Chong Wei won silver in the men's singles of the badminton tournament. Cheng Chu Sian finished eighth in the men's individual archery competition, and the team finished 6th.
Lee Chong Wei was able to repeat his silver medal in 2012. As in Beijing, he lost the final against Lin Dan from China . In the men's doubles, Ko Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong lost their game for bronze. In diving, Pandelela Rinong Pamg won bronze in jumping. The cyclist Azizulhasni Awang finished sixth in the keirin and eighth in the sprint. In the men's individual archery, Mohamed Khairul Anuar took 6th place.
The 2016 Summer Games became Malaysia’s most successful Olympic Games. For the third time in a row, Lee Chong Wei won silver in the men's badminton singles. Although he was able to defeat his opponent Lin Dan in the semifinals, he lost to his compatriot Chen Long in the final . Silver also went to the men's doubles Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong , who defeated the German duo Michael Fuchs and Johannes Schöttler in the group stage . A third silver medal was won by the mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying . The fourth silver went to the water divers Jun Hoong Cheong and Pandelela Rinong Pamg in synchronized diving from the tower. Jun Hoong Cheong and her partner Nur Dhabitah Sabri took 5th place in synchronized jumping. Azizulhasni Awang contributed a bronze medal in the keirin.
The first Malaysian Olympic team at the Winter Games in 2018 consisted of an alpine ski racer and a figure skater.
Youth games
At the first Youth Summer Games in Singapore in 2010 , 13 teenagers, seven boys and six girls, competed in athletics, badminton, diving, gymnastics, sailing, swimming and weightlifting. The water diver Pandelela Rinong Pamg won the silver medal in both art and high diving. In the boys singles of the badminton tournament, Loh Wei Sheng lost his game for the bronze medal. The rhythmic gymnast Lee Wan Nin took 4th place in the final ranking.
In 2014 in Nanjing , 20 young people, eleven boys and nine girls, took part in athletics, archery, badminton, diving, horse riding, golf, gymnastics, sailing, shooting, swimming and taekwondo. The water diver Loh Zhiayi won silver in diving and bronze in artificial diving. Two other medals, which are not included in Malaysia's medal balance, were won in mixed teams. In badminton, Cheam June Wei and his partner Ng Tsz Yau from Hong Kong were Olympic champions in mixed doubles. The archer Zarif Zolkepeli won a bronze medal in mixed doubles with his German partner Cynthia Freywald.
