The Olympic history of Tonga is still quite short: Tonga sends to athletes since 1984 Summer Olympics . In 2014 the island nation, which became independent in 1970, took part in the winter games for the first time . Young athletes have been sent to both of the youth summer games held so far .

General overview

Olympic Summer Games

Tonga's first Olympic team consisted of boxers in Los Angeles in 1984. At the following Olympic Games, athletes from Tonga took part in athletics (from 1988), weightlifting (from 1992), judo and archery (from 2004), swimming (from 2012) and taekwondo (from 2016).

The boxers Lisiate Lavulo (light welterweight), Saikoloni Hala (welterweight) and Elone Lutui (light middleweight) were Tonga's first Olympians on July 29, 1984. Tonga's first woman at the Olympic Games was Siololovau Ikavuka, a discus thrower on September 28, 1988.

Boxer Paea Wolfgramm achieved the greatest success in Tonga in 1996 in Atlanta. In the heavyweight division, he qualified for the final and was defeated by the Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko on points. With his silver medal, he was the first and so far only medalist in Tonga.

winter Olympics

In 2014 in Sochi, a Tongan winter athlete competed in the Winter Olympics for the first time. Luge rider Bruno Banani , actually Fuahea Semi, wanted to start in Vancouver in 2010, but was injured in the last qualifying run. In 2018 Pita Taufatofua took part in cross-country skiing . Taufatofua competed in Taekwondo at the Rio Summer Games in 2016. In 2016 and 2018, he was also the team's flag bearer, making him one of the few Olympic athletes to serve as the team's flag bearer at both the summer and winter games.

Youth Olympic Games

Tonga took part in the 2010 Summer Youth Games in Singapore with two teenagers . A boy and a girl competed in weightlifting and taekwondo.

In 2014 in Nanjing , three teenage athletes, one boy and two girls, took part. They competed in weight lifting, archery, and swimming.
