Pita Nikolas Taufatofua (born November 5, 1983 in Australia ) is a Taekwondo fighter and cross-country skier from Tonga .

Taekwondo

In February 2016 he won the oceanic qualifying tournament for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . At the opening ceremony he was the flag bearer of his team . He received special applause from the audience for his appearance in traditional costume and with an oiled upper body. Taufatofua competed in the heavyweight division and was eliminated in the first round.

Cross-country skiing

In 2017 Taufatofua competed in the Nordic World Ski Championships in cross-country skiing and worked towards participating in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. After a 153rd place in the qualification over the sprint distance of 1600 m, he could not qualify for the final of his discipline. In January 2018, he finally managed to meet the Olympic standard in a race in Iceland . At the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, he appeared in traditional costume and with an oiled upper body and carried the flag of his country . In the race over 15 km freestyle he ran in 114th place out of 119 starters, just 23 minutes behind Olympic champion Dario Cologna .
