Olympic history of Chinese Taipei
5 | 7th | 12 |
The Republic of China (Taiwan) has been participating in the Olympic Games since 1956. Between 1912 and 1928, athletes from the island of Taiwan could start for Japan because Japan occupied the island after the Sino-Japanese War of 1894/95 . From 1932 to 1948, Chinese athletes from Taiwan competed with athletes from mainland China as members of the Republic of China team . After the Kuomintang withdrew to the island of Taiwan at the end of the Chinese civil war , China was represented by Taiwan at the Olympic Games. Because of this, the People's Republic of China , founded in 1949, did not take part. After the boycott of the 1976 and 1980 Games, an agreement was reached whereby both Chinese teams could take part in the Olympic Games. The People's Republic of China participated as China . Taiwan adopted the name Chinese Taipei . She was assigned a special Olympic flag. Since then, the national flag song has been played at award ceremonies .
