The first Olympian in Eritrea was Yonas Kifle in the 10,000 meter run on September 22, 2000 . On the same day, Eritrea's first woman, Nebiat Habtemariam, started in the 5000 meter run.

In Beijing in 2008 , like in 2000 and 2004, only track and field athletes competed. Over 5000 m, Kidane Tadesse, the brother of the Athens medalist, came tenth in the final. His brother was able to achieve 5th place over 10,000 m this time, Kidane was twelfth. In the men's marathon, Yared Asmerom achieved a top placement with 8th place.

A cyclist was used for the first time at the 2012 London Games . This time there were only top placements over 10,000 m. Zersenay Tadesse finished sixth, his teammate Teklemariam Medhin seventh.
