Hong Kong , whose NOK , the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong China , was founded in 1950 andrecognizedby the IOC in1951, has participated in the Summer Olympic Games since 1952. In 1980 the call to boycott the Moscow Games was followed. Athletes have also been sent to the Winter Games since 2002, and young people have been sent to both of the Youth Summer Games that have been held so far. As part of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , Hong Kong hosted the Olympic equestrian competitions.
Overview
Summer games
The first Olympic team in Hong Kong consisted of swimmers in 1952. At the following summer games, athletes from Hong Kong competed in shooting (from 1960), athletics, boxing, sailing, cycling and hockey (from 1964), fencing and judo (from 1972), canoeing (from 1976), archery and diving (from 1984 ), Table tennis (from 1988), badminton and rowing (from 1992), triathlon (from 2004), horse riding (from 2008), gymnastics and weightlifting (from 2012) and golf (from 2016).
Hong Kong's first Olympic athletes competed in the Helsinki swimming competition on July 26, 1952. The first Olympian in Hong Kong was freestyle swimmer Francisco Monteiro. The first women went into the pool on the same day, the freestyle swimmer Cynthia Eager and the breaststroke swimmer Irene Kwok.
The first success came in 1996 in Atlanta. Here the first medal, a gold medal, was won. Windsurfer Lee Lai Shan became the first medalist and Olympic champion in Hong Kong. Four years later she reached 6th place and 4th place in 2004. In Athens, Ko Lai Chak and Li Ching won silver in the men's doubles of the table tennis tournament .
In 2008 in Beijing, the windsurfer Chan King Yin took 6th place. In table tennis, the women's team defeated Germany 3-0 in the preliminary round and, like the men, reached the playoff round, in which they were eliminated. In 2012 in London, track cyclist Lee Wai-sze won bronze in the Keirin. In the table tennis tournament, the men's team reached the match for bronze. Here Germany lost 1: 3. The women's team was eliminated in the quarterfinals against South Korea.
In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Lee Wai-sze was sixth in the sprint and seventh in the keirin. The windsurfer Michael Cheng reached 8th place. In the table tennis tournament, the women's team met Germany in the quarter-finals and lost 1: 3. In the mixed doubles of the badminton tournament, the duel between Lee Chun Hei / Chau Hoi Wah and the German duo Michael Fuchs / Birgit Michels took place in the preliminary round . Lee and Chau won the game 2-0, but were eliminated like the German couple in the preliminary round.
Winter games
Hong Kong's Winter Olympians only competed in the short track from 2002 to 2014. In 2018, an alpine ski racer took part for the first time. The first participant was Christy Ren in the 1500 meter race on February 13, 2002. The first man from Hong Kong to attend the Winter Games was Barton Lui on February 10, 2014. The most successful was Han Yueshuang , who finished 18th over 1000 meters in 2006.
Youth games
Fourteen youth athletes, seven boys and seven girls, took part in the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore . They competed in athletics, horse riding, fencing, sailing, swimming, table tennis and triathlon. The sailing athlete Michael Cheng won the silver medal in the Techno 293 class . Another silver medal, which is not taken into account in Hong Kong's medal balance, was won by show jumper Jasmine Zin Man Lai in the Australasia mixed team .
18 teenagers, ten boys and eight girls, competed in the 2014 Summer Youth Games in Nanjing . They participated in badminton, horse riding, fencing, golf, sailing, swimming, table tennis and triathlon. Four silver and one bronze medals were won. Swimmer Siobhan Bernadette Haughey won two silver medals in the 100 meter freestyle and 200 meter medley. The fencer Chun Yin Choi won silver with the foil, Hoi Kem Doo won silver in the women's singles of the table tennis tournament. The mixed doubles Hoi Kem Doo and Ka Tak Hung won bronze. Two gold medals were won in mixed teams, which are not included in the Hong Kong medal balance. The fencers Kei Hsu Chien and Chun Yin Choi became Olympic champions with the mixed team Asia-Oceania 1 . Badminton player Ng Tsz Yau became Olympic champion in a mixed doubles match with Malaysian Cheam June Wei .
IOC members
The politician and entrepreneur Timothy Fok was elected an IOC member in 2001. The President of the Hong Kong Football Association became an honorary member in 2016 and is still a member of the Commissions for Culture and Olympic Heritage, Auditing and Coordination of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
