Ireland , whose NOK , the Olympic Council of Ireland ( Irish Comhairle Oilimpeach na hÉireann ) was founded in 1922 andrecognizedby the IOC , has been participating in the Summer Olympics since 1924. Since 1992 athletes have also been sent to the winter games.

history

Ireland itself has not yet hosted an Olympic Summer or Winter Games. A total of 744 athletes, including 135 women, competed. Athletes from Ireland have won 31 medals so far, all of them at summer games. The most successful athlete is the swimmer Michelle Smith , who won three golds and one bronze between 1988 and 1996. The first medal winner was the artist Oliver St. John Gogarty , who won bronze in the 1924 art competitions.

The youngest member of a team from Ireland was the swimmer Aisling O'Leary at the 1972 Summer Games in Munich , who started at the age of 15. The sailor Joe McMenamin was also the oldest participant in Irish Olympic history in 1972 at the age of 59.

Paddy Carroll was the only Irishman to carry the flag of Ireland twice at an Olympic opening ceremony.

The NOK of Ireland represents the entire island of Ireland. So you also leads Northern Ireland which the United Kingdom is one with under the name Ireland. In the meantime, a special Olympic flag for the island has been proposed. The NOK renamed itself in 1952 to make this clear, therefore from Irish Olympic Council to Olympic Council of Ireland .
