Burkina Faso , whose NOK , the Comité National Olympique et des Sports Burkinabè , was founded in 1965 andrecognizedby the IOC in1972, has been taking part in the Summer Olympics since 1988. A delegation was sent to Munich as early as 1972, when the athletes competed under the name of Upper Volta . So far, no athletes in the country have participated in the winter games.
1972 to 1996
In 1972 in Munich , 100-meter runner André Bicaba was the first Olympian in his country. In 1976, the country followed the call to boycott African countries and did not send a team to the Montreal Games . They also stayed away from the games in Moscow in 1980 and Los Angeles in 1984 , but the country did not follow the calls for boycotts by the USA (1980) and the Soviet Union (1984). The NOK was unable to send teams for financial reasons.
In 1988 in Seoul , a team started under the new name of the state, Burkina Faso, in athletics and boxing. The track and field athlete Mariama Ouiminga was the first female Olympian in her country.
From 2000
Participants from Burkina Faso were also unsuccessful in the subsequent Olympic Games. In 2004 in Athens participants competed in judo and swimming for the first time, and in 2008 in Beijing also in fencing.
